Here
is just an example of Part 8a of the 12 Part mini
course on “Insider’s Secrets on Growing and Caring
for Orchids Like a Pro”.
Orchid
Diseases
The
effective prevention, control and treatment of orchid
diseases is an essential part of orchid growing, as it will be a very
fortunate
orchid lover who does not come across one or more of the common
diseases of
orchids at some point.
First
of all, it is worth understanding the circumstances
under which diseases can appear in your orchids.
The
disease must come into contact with the host plant at an
infectious stage of its life cycle, the surrounding conditions must be
capable
of supporting the disease, and the plant must be vulnerable to that
particular
disease. The orchid grower can do much to intervene in this situation
and
thereby reduce the chances of orchid diseases taking hold in their
growing
area. For example:
- Quarantine
new, suspect, or infected plants
- Ensure
all leaves are dry before evening
- Select
strong, or even disease-resistant plants
- Avoid
damaging any plant tissue
- Always
remove plant debris from individual plants and the growing area
- Do
not overcrowd plants
- Ensure
good air flow
- Sterilize
tools – especially cutting tools
Orchid
diseases typically fall into one of three categories:
Bacterial, fungal or viral. Bacterial and fungal infections in
particular can
spread between plants very quickly, but remember –
transmission can only come
from contact. This may be plant to plant touching, contaminated water
droplets,
or indeed via the unwitting orchid grower.
